The degrading environment was not a concern at the time of Gandhi, but his ideas on development, technology, self sufficiency, village Swaraj etc. disclose a range of possible solutions to the rising environmental concerns of the time. Environmental Planning and Coordination Organization (EPCO) a premier organization in the field of environment is brings an opportunity to understand and explore Gandhian Philosophy for a green and sustainable future. EPCO is organizing a series of events in the commemoration of 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi with the objective to sensitize people and introduce them to the environmental relevance in Gandhian Philosophy and ideology from October 2, 2018 to October 2, 2019. The yearlong events will be organized under the title of “गाँधी प्रसंग”.

2. Gandhian Eco-Philosophy Fellowship
A unique initiative that offers time, space, resources and an opportunity to delve deep into the realm of Gandhian Philosophy, gain practical experience of the principles of Gandhian philosophy and Explore ecological relevance of Gandhian Philosophy.
What is Gandhian Eco-Philosophy Fellowship programme?
Gandhian Eco-Philosophy fellowship programme is a unique initiative by Environmental Planning and Coordination Organization (EPCO), Department of Environment, Government of M.P with the objective to support and stimulate scholarly deliberations on the relevance of Gandhian Philosophy in context of sustainable development, environment and peace.
It is nine month (January 2019 to September 2019) non-residential fellowship programme being coordinated and anchored by State Knowledge Management Centre on Climate Change (SKMCCC) at EPCO. The fellowship is designed to offer an experience of deep understanding of the Gandhian philosophy and provide practical experience of Gandhian principles and its relevance in today’s environmental crisis.
The Gandhian Eco-Philosophy Fellowship design is in four parts each connecting very organically to one another. The fellowship comprises of vivid experiences from guided visits to sustainable project sites/villages, knowledge centers of Gandhian philosophy (Wardha, Sabarmati Ashram etc.), knowledge sessions with experts and scholars of Gandhian Philosophy all leading towards writing a high quality research paper with high impact.
- Knowledge Sessions: Interactive sessions with thinkers, experts and practitioners of Gandhian Philosophy for fellows are organized for the fellows to enhance their understanding of Gandhian philosophy and its applicability in current times. Apart from this the fellows have standing invitation to attend all the talks of Gandhian Environmentalism Talk Series themed “Understanding Gandhian Philosophy Sustainable Development. Environment. Peace”.
- Exposure Visits: Fellows are taken on guided tours to places of traditional wisdom, environmental importance; villages where Gandhian Philosophy has been translated into actions.
- Research Paper Writing: During the course of the fellowship the fellows undertake writing research paper worthy enough of publishing in peer reviewed journals. The paper writing process is guided by the team of experts at EPCO.
- Symposium and Publication: The fellows will get an opportunity to present their work in Symposium on “Understanding Gandhian Philosophy Sustainable Development. Environment. Peace” to be organized in 2019.
Meet our fellows
Santosh Kumar Sharma
Trained at IIM Udaipur; Center for Development Management; Santosh Kumar Sharma brings 15 years of experience in training and community development. Santosh has worked immensely in the field of training, volunteer management, community development and skilling projects. He brings an experience of more than 10, 000 hours of training and volunteer management. He is a Volunteer at International Professors Project where he volunteers for managing online learning training platforms. He is highly skilled at using technology in training and has designed several online course modules on various topics. Santosh is an avid believer of equal opportunities for male and female work force. He has designed and implemented several social audit programs for various workplaces to ensure a gender neutral working environment. He also specializes in designing and implementing Gender Sensitization workshops at work place. He is also training organizations and institutions on Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) at workplace. He has designed an online module on POSH training. He is known to bring a lot new elements in his training delivery which includes theatre and community art. He is an expert in managing large scale multiple stakeholder’s projects. In one of his projects he has managed teacher training program for government school teachers in 10 states of India. He believes in data based decision and according to Santosh, data never lies.
Anupama V S is currently pursuing Master of Infrastructure Planning at CEPT University, Ahmedabad. An environment enthusiast, her core interest areas are urban water, sanitation and waste management sectors. She takes urbanisation as an inevitable, and hopes to develop a holistic understanding of how this transition can be made as sustainable as possible. Her interest in Gandhian studies and principles began at home, where she witnessed her parents dedicating their lives to social work and propagating equality and justice to all, in addition to their professional fronts. Through the fellowship, Anupama hopes to gain a fresh perspective from the interdisciplinary approach, which will aid in her quest to dig deeper into the overlapping principles of sustainability and Gandhian thought, that she strongly believes in. When not thinking about sustainability, one can find Anupama practising Carnatic Classical Vocal in which she’s received formal training for over 8 years. Additionally, she intends to hone her writing skills by capturing her travel experiences through short poems.
Saurabh Tewari is Assistant Professor at the departments of Design and Architecture, School of Planning and Architecture Bhopal. He is a Doctoral Candidate in Design at IIT Kanpur. After studying Architecture (B. Arch, 2003-08) at SSSA Gurgaon and Communication Design (M. Des, 2008-10) at IDC, IIT Bombay. He has been teaching courses in basic design, visual design, and architectural and design history. He is one of the co-initiators of the Master of Design programme at SPA Bhopal with an integral focus on Socio-Cultural Design. He has published research and intends to work around the discourses of design, sustainability, and urbanism.
Mausmi is a zealous young professional, she holds a master’s degree in Urban Planning from School of Planning & Architecture, New Delhi & bachelor’s in Architecture from Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology, Bhopal. She has a varied experience of 6 years in Corporate Planning Consultancies and Academics in Dubai, New Delhi and Bhopal. Currently she is pursuing PhD in Travel Behaviour in Public Transportation Systems under Department of Urban and Regional Planning in School of Planning and Architecture, Bhopal. Her moral upbringing along with a good academic background, has kept her rooted and sensitized to issues which India has been facing in different realms of urban development. With panache for dance, music, reading and quizzing, she finds herself resonant with students and research-oriented work. Her priority to professional ethics has kept her focused towards working for the masses along with the Gandhian Eco-Philosophy Fellowship Programme which envisages the same mission to address equity and sustainability in environment, development and peace.

Ram Awatar Yadav
Ram Awtar Yadav is a doctoral research scholar at the department of communication, university of Hyderabad. His topic of research is Environmental communication. Prior to that he has worked as a journalist with The Hitvada, an English daily of Bhopal for more than four years. He has also taught journalism at Makhanlal Chaturvedi University of Journalism and Communication, Bhopal and Guru Ghasidas University, Bilaspur for around three years. He has presented research papers at various national and international conferences and has been a recipient of travel fellowship from university of Gavle, Sweden for presenting a research paper on ‘civil society and protection of water bodies in India’ in December -2017.
Manoj is an independent multidisciplinary researcher with keen interest in research and advocacy. He has taught concepts like gender and sexuality, culture and indigenous communities. He is armed with rich experience on material culture, community studies and indigenous knowledge systems in India. Having worked with many NGOs and academic institutions, he has conducted many initiatives based on research and deep understanding of indigenous community system. He also received his Doctorate Degree in December 2018
A self- motivated individual and has successfully completed BA (Hons), MA English Literature from the University of Calcutta and MPhil in English from the University of Pune. I am have submitted my PhD in English from the University of Mumbai (thesis pending). I come from a strong pedagogic background and have always believed that learning is a lifelong process and the best way to learn is to seek a beautiful amalgamation of teaching and learning. I have been lucky enough to get a chance in teaching in prestigious institutions like Symbiosis College of Arts and Commerce and National Defence Academy. My strength as a teacher lies in being able to see things from the perspective of a student and inspire the process to become more joyful, fulfilling and enjoyable. I am a trained Bharatnatyam dancer and I have performed in various stages in and around India.

Jeet Singh is a postgraduate in sociology and social work. He is a public policy researcher currently working with Rajiv Gandhi Institute for Contemporary Studies (RGICS) in New Delhi. He leads RGICS work on Environment, Natural resources and Sustainability. His research interests includes Traditional Ecological Knowledge, Forest based Livelihood, sustainable use of natural resources and climate change. Previously he worked with range of organizations including grass root action groups, research institutions and advocacy organization. Recently he received Sahapedia-UNESCO Fellowship from Sahapedia. He has published several articles and paper. Jeet has also co-authored a book entitled – ‘Lok Nanda: Nandi Kund Nanda Jaat’ that describes social, cultural, religious and ecological traditions in mountains of Uttarakhand. He interprets Mahatma Gandhi’s writing on nature as localized solutions to solve global problem of environment degradation and climate change. This perspective motivated Jeet to be part of Gandhian Eco-Philosophy Fellowship.
Rajat Tiwari is pursuing Masters in Development Studies from Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati. He has done his Bachelors in Humanities and Social Sciences from Cluster Innovation Centre, University of Delhi. CIC provided him the right platform to engage in research activities from a very early age through its semester long projects. After Graduating from University of Delhi in 2017, he joined Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India as a research Intern for six Months. Rajat represented India in the 6th NIDA cultural camp in Bangkok organized by the Thai Government in the summer of 2017. His article titled “Ethos of Journalism in the Post-Truth World” was published by World Youth Forum Right to Dialogue, University of Trieste, Italy in 2017. Rajat is a Gandhi-Eco Philosophy Fellow at the EPCO, Government of Madhya Pradesh. He is concerned by the current environmental degradation happening around in the name of development, he is fascinated by the Gandhi’s simple and indigenous way to solve the societal issues of our country. As a fellow, he is currently working on the Gandhi’s Idea of health and its relevance in the contemporary Indian society.
Ms Chinmai Hemani, is Climate change and Sustainability professional from India with a rich experience of over five years in Climate change Vulnerability assessment, adaptation planning, Policy analysis wrt Climate Change and Sustainable Development, sustainable lifestyle and living, Corporate Social Responsibility(CSR) initiatives focussing environment and sustainability. She is engaged with many NGOs, corporates, institutions and brings in enthusiasm and creative insights catering many sectors and cross-connections contributing to betterment at grassroots level. She comes with prior work experience of over eight years in Telecom domain in Telecom and IT MNCs. During this tenure apart from her core work, her elaborate experience of leading Environment Conservation related CSR activities within the corporate and outside, motivated many associates and locals alike to make noteable contribution by upscaling to pro-environment lifestyle changes. She is an avid nature-lover, believer of frugal living, a conservationist at heart and a traveller. She sincerely believes that wisdoms from traditional knowledge, religion and ancient India can show way to the world on Sustainable living. Highest impact change can be only brought through change in behaviour and action and that keeping non-violence at centre of all initiatives if adopted globally would be a welcome move to speedy sustainable development and low carbon path way as propounded by Jain and Gandhian philosophy.
Tarika Mohite Dagadkar
Ar.Tarika Mohite Dagadkar has completed her Bachelor in Architecture (2001) and Master in Industrial Design (2008). She has recently submitted her Ph.D report in RTMNU and working as Associate Professor at Smt. Manoramabai Mundle College of Architecture, Nagpur (MS) India. She is being into teaching and architectural practice since last 16 years. Her area of expertise is Sustainable construction technologies and Vernacular Architecture practiced in India. She has published many research papers and documented Vernacular Architecture practiced in Vidarbha Region. Ar. Tarika has also contributed to the research project “Development of Compendium of Appropriate, Green Technologies for Housing Construction Supported by Indira Awas Yojana in the state of Maharashtra, commissioned by UNDP, MORD (GOI) and HUDCO” Ar. डाॅ. तेजराम पाल ने दर्शनशास्त्र विषय में “गांधी-दर्शन के समदर्शी नीतिशास्त्र के एकादश आधार (एक समीक्षात्मक अध्ययन)” पर हेमवती नन्दन बहुगुणा गढ़वाल केन्द्रीय विश्वविद्यालय से च्ीण्क् की उपाधि अर्जित की है। विश्वविद्यालय अनुदान आयोग द्वारा मान्यता प्राप्त अन्तर्राष्ट्रीय व राष्ट्रीय पत्रिका में दस शोध-पत्र प्रकाशित हो चुके हैं। अन्तर्राष्ट्रीय व राष्ट्रीय अधिवेशन एवं संगोष्ठी में शोध-पत्र प्रस्तुत किये है। गांधी विचार परिषद, वर्धा में आयोजित 9 दिवसीय “गांधी विचार शिविर” में भाग लेने के साथ साथ दर्शनशास्त्र विषय सम्बंधित विभिन्न शीर्षकांे में कार्यशाला में सम्मलित हो चुकें हैं। जटाशंकर त्रिवेदी शासकीय महाविद्यालय में 1 वर्ष तक अतिथि विद्वान के रूप में अपनी सेवाएं दे चुके हैं। इसके अतिरिक्त सामाजिक और पर्यावरणीय संबन्धित कार्याें में भी सक्रिय हैं। गांधीवादी दृष्टिकोण से पर्यावरण और विज्ञान के विकास में सामंजस्य स्थापित करने के उद्देश्य से वर्तमान में ‘पर्यावरण नियोजन और समन्वय संगठन’ (म्च्ब्व्) से “गांधीयन एको फिलोसोफी फैलोशिप” में शोध-कार्य कर रहे हैं।
Ishan Agrawal is working as a Senior Program Manager and Team Leader with Foundation for Ecological Security from 2010 in Mandla district of Madhya Pradesh, a state in Central India. He has a passion for community based conservation and holds a firm belief in collective action at local level for restoring and conserving landscapes. Ishan is member of MP State Action Plan core committee for Biodiversity conservation for the period of 2018 - 2027 organized by MP State Biodiversity Board. Ishan is also Lead India Fellow Cohort 17. He has attended and presented his work in seminar on Climate Change and Natural Resource Management organized by United States Forest Service-International Programs and University Of California-Davis campus and Global Soil Week organized in Berlin in 2017. He is also a member, Network for Conserving Central India.
Himanshu Soni is an architect, with focus on eco-friendly architectural practices, involving maximum use of natural materials and upcycling of waste. With this approach he has served in permanent capacity at Airports Authority of India as Manager (Architect) and also Central Public Works Department. Currently he is running his own Architectural Consultancy firm, contributing not just to profession but also to academics by conducting inter-disciplinary workshops reducing gap between academic and practical world. Through his efforts he is strengthening the eco-system for local and traditional wisdom to become part of mainstream practices. He is a post-graduate in Architecture from CEPT, Ahmedabad, with specialization in Theory and Design (2010-12). His under-graduate study in Architecture was completed from Govt. College of Architecture, Lucknow (2004-09). During his education he has done studies on sustainable- village developed on life principles of Gandhi Ji, which influenced both his professional and research choices. He is always enthusiastic about integrating lessons from Gandhi Ji’s life, in his works and believes in sustainability as a way of life. He has been also part of documenting core heritage sites related to Gandhi Ji in Bihar for Ministry of Culture, under Gandhi Heritage Site Mission.
Sarita currently works at Urban Management Centre (UMC) and coordinates information, education and communication components of Water and Sanitation programme. With over 22 years of work experience, Sarita has developed discussion papers for sustainable development goals viz. Water and Sanitation, Education, Employment and Livelihood; Health and Poverty. Training, capacity building and policy analysis are her core strengths. She has wide experience in leading projects related to water and sanitation, environment education, sustainability and climate change, monitoring and evaluation, textbook content development, information support and awareness in Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Goa, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. She has a Master’s degree in Education and Diploma in Computer Science apart from Bachelor’s degree in Zoology. Her interest in Gandhian studies developed while doing research and writing for Sabarmati Shatabdi: Ek Karyanjali. Since then she got interested in aspects of environment and sustainable development as seen in Gandhi's writing
